Charles (Bud) Tingwell left the world this morning and, as to be expected, tributes are coming in via the truckload and will for many a day. The State funeral will be held for him on Wednesday apparently but I will miss it, being on a plane to L.A.. However, I will be there in spirit. All who had any dealings with Bud, even the slightest meeting, loved him as his inner honesty was as great as his outer smiles. That's a rare quality as was his ability to reach old, young, rich, poor, talented and downright dopey with equal perspicacity, wit and charm.
I have spent many happy hours with him over the years and was honoured to have served as President of the Producers' and Directors' Guild of Victoria with him as Vice-President. His long experience cast great insight across every issue. He never shirked from a task and was as generous with his time as if he believed that he would live till the age of 500! Youth benefited greatly from his advice.
'Love' seems almost inadequate a word to use but it was true - we all loved Bud and then there was respect, awe at his energy, appreciation at his ability to lighten a moment and admired him as a versatile, accomplished and sensitive actor and a total spunk!
Condolences to the Tingwell family as this void is one that will be impossible to fill, but I have seen in you the great qualities of your wonderful parents and these are things that never die.
Safe journey wherever you are now Bud, and I will always carry your spirit in my heart.
